The City and the Venues
There is a great mix of ingredients that makes Perugia one of the most representative Italian cities: thanks to its position on a high hilltop, visitors are delighted by a breathtaking landscape on the surrounding hills and valleys and are pleased by the delicious traditional cuisine where the truffle plays as the unquestioned protagonist.
History, Art, Culture, Religion and Nature create a magical atmosphere that will inspire visitors from all over the World.
Perugia is the capital city of both the Umbria Region, at the very centre of Italy, and the Province of Perugia that covers a high hilltop and part of the valleys around the area. The city is located about 164 kilometers (102 miles) North of Rome and 148 km (92 miles) South-East of Florence. The region of Umbria is bordered by Tuscany, Lazio, and Marche.
The history of Perugia goes back to the Etruscan period: the first traces of a settlement are dated to the 11th and 10th Century B.C. and it grew to become one of the main Etruscan cities. It played an important role under the Roman Empire as well and it was one of the first communities to embrace Christianity. Between the 13th and the 14th Century A.D., the city of Perugia lived a flourish moment in which many of the buildings that still characterize it – such as the Fontana Maggiore (Major Fountain), Palazzo dei Priori (the Priori Palace) and the major Churches of the area – were built.
Perugia and its surroundings are also well known worldwide for being the landscapes where Saint Francis lived: it was between Assisi and Perugia that St. Francis heard God calling him and decided to devote his life to Him, embracing poverty and founding the Franciscan Order.
Nowadays, Perugia is also a well-known cultural and artistic centre of Italy. The city hosts multiple annual festivals and events, e.g. The International Journalism Festival (in April), the Umbria Jazz Festival (in July), the Eurochocolate Festival (in October).
